About Women in Resistance: Algeria-Ireland | 10949 Women
Bringing together Algerian and Irish photographers, film-makers, performance artists and curators, this second day will open up a series of fascinating comparative conversations; ones that explore how creatives in both countries have sought to overcome amnesia and recover the role of women.
Screenings include Nassima Guessoum’s remarkable 2014 film 10949 Women, an intimate portrait of Nassima Hablal, one of the forgotten heroines of the Algerian Revolution and Sarah El-Hamed’s The Handover, a poetic tale of the power of sisterhood and the resilience of women in Algerian culture. Participants include the photographer Nadja Makhlouf, the sociologist Linda Connolly, author of the acclaimed The Irish Women’s Movement: From Revolution to Devolution (2022) and the historians Aoife Connolly, Martin Evans, Slimane Hargas, Dónal Hassett and Mairead Ni Bhriain.
