About Uly

presented by MCD

Deeply influenced by pop, soul, jazz, nostalgic production value and doing-it-yourself –  Uly (né Rafino Murphy)’s work is highly personal, exploratory and largely revolves around identity and self all against a backdrop of comforting, immersive and captivating harmony.

After a devastating loss of a decade’s worth of music and a would-be new album back in June, Uly has decided the only thing to do is begin again. Burying himself in new work and turning his back on the hectic summer festival season, Uly is set to release completely new work from September. It is sonically fresh for him, yet familiar – slotting seamlessly into his sonic world. It highlights Uly’s growth as an artist – both in craft and technical ability. It is rich, vibrant, full of texture, and maybe most importantly – it sums his work up perfectly: sometimes sad, sometimes groovy.

Praised by the Irish music scene as a voice to watch, high-profile placements on both RTÉ/BBC/Hulu’s Normal People and Conversations With Friends, an ever growing collaborative discography, a widely acclaimed 1822.demos mixtape release earlier this year and plenty of new music in the pipeline and his for booked for October/November – Uly is definitely not to be missed.

[…] Uly may be a child of the greatest traditions, but he’s also etching out his own corner. – Dean Van Nguyen, Pitchfork
