About Talk Talk: In A Silent Way

Join us for a matinee screening of the Talk Talk documentary ‘In a Silent Way’ by Belgian director Gwenaël Breës as he attempts to unravel the mysteries of their fourth album Spirit Of Eden, 30 years on from its original release. The problem? Up to his death in 2019 lead singer Mark Hollis notoriously declined all interview requests and the rest of the band has followed suit, refusing to allow their music to be used on film. Armed with a boom mic, Breës must attempt the impossible – to make a film about a band that does not want to be filmed, and tell the story of the ultimate art rock album without playing the record. His journey becomes an organic quest with silence as a horizon line and punk as a philosophy, as he contends, despite all obstacles, that music is accessible to all and the human spirit is above technique.

After hits such as It’s My Life in their early years as a synth-pop band, Talk Talk, under the guidance of its leader Mark Hollis and producer Tim Friese-Greene, mutated into something very different. The band’s last three albums, The Colour of Spring (1986), Spirit of Eden (1988) and Laughing Stock (1991), were characterised by an improvisational, ascetic approach that has since proved hugely influential, credited as one of the building blocks of the post-rock movement. Despite – or perhaps because of – a lack of participation from the band’s surviving members (Hollis died in 2019), Gwenaël Breës’s film is a thought-provoking meditation on the artistic process.
