PLAYBACK: Aladdin Sane

About PLAYBACK: Aladdin Sane

Playback return for a brand new re-enactment, this time paying tribute to Ziggy Stardust himself, David Bowie, as they blast through the hits of his sixth studio album, Aladdin Sane + other classic Bowie hits.

David Bowie’s classic Aladdin Sane exploded onto the scene like a lightning bolt 50 years ago this year. Come and listen as Playback perform the album from start to finish – Mick Ronson guitar workouts, Mike Garson piano fury and all. Expect plenty of makeup, glitter, themed images and theatrical movement, plus an encore set that draws on the Starman’s greatest hits.

Ticket includes entry to the afterparty till late!

Playback is a self proclaimed “album tribute” band. They play classic albums by iconic music figures all the way through, then round out our sets with some of the artist’s greatest hits. So far they’ve taken on Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde, David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane and most recently, Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense. They are no strangers to the Irish music scene, and have performed shows across the country, drawing large crowds whenever they play.

Their newest show, “Still Don’t Make No Sense: The Music of Stop Making Sense” first began at Greystones’ Whale Theatre in April 2019. Since then they have taken the night to venues around the country, including Roisin Dubh in Galway, and Dublin venues Opium and the Button Factory. The show includes all sixteen songs from the film as well as iconic props, costumes and visual moments like the tape deck, the lamp and the Big Suit. Extras include hits like “And She Was” and “Road to Nowhere” plus a full band version of “Psycho Killer”.

Playback‘s core lineup consists of Justin McCann (vocals, keys), Gordon Dunning (bass) and Mark Finlay (drums). “Still Don’t Make No Sense” also features Cathal Farrelly on vocals, guitar and Big Suit, Paula Size and Louise Carley on backing vocals, Jack Hussey on lead guitar and Ronan Slater on percussion. Dowie Mooney, Alan Maguire, Karen Williams and Kiruu have also performed with the band over the years.

They now have a ‘60s album, a ‘70s album and an ‘80s album in our repertoire. Down the line we may take on classics from other decades like Screamadelica, Sound of Silver and ArchAndroid, who knows?
