About Kelly Finnigan & The Atonements
presented by ChoiceCuts
Kelly Finnigan’s A Lover Was Born blends grit and grace, turning passion into virtue with a sound rooted in the Midwest soul traditions of labels like King and Curtom. This solo release from The Monophonics frontman isn’t nostalgic—it’s alive with longing and hope.
Following his 2019 solo debut The Tales People Tell, the album reflects Finnigan’s growth over 11 tracks. Written across California, Ohio, and Staten Island, he collaborated with long-time friends and musicians like Max and Joe Ramey (The Ironsides), Jimmy James, and Jay Mumford (J-Zone).
Influences like Isaac Hayes and Jerry Ragovoy shape the album’s blend of Northern Soul, Deep Soul, and Boom Bap, featuring standout tracks like “Be Your Own Shelter” and “Get a Hold of Yourself.” Slower, emotional cuts like “Let Me Count the Reasons” and “All That’s Left” reveal Finnigan’s tender side. His raw, earthy voice evokes the tradition of R&B greats like Otis Redding and David Ruffin, while the album’s DNA pulls from hip-hop pioneers like Dilla and RZA, showcasing the timeless depth of soul.
