When Doves Cry: A Prince Film Night
The Sugar Club, Dublin — Friday 29 May 2026

The Sugar Club presents a special double bill celebrating one of music’s most singular artists. When Doves Cry brings together two landmark Prince films on one night — Purple Rain (1984, 111 mins) and Sign of the Times (1987, 85 mins) — screened back to back with table service, cocktails, and pizza throughout, followed by a full club night when the credits roll.

Purple Rain remains one of the great rock films. Loosely autobiographical, it follows Prince’s alter ego The Kid through ambition, family, and the Minneapolis club scene — held together by one of the greatest soundtracks ever committed to film. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Score.

Sign of the Times is a different beast entirely. Filmed at Paisley Park and directed by Prince himself, it is widely regarded as one of the finest concert films ever made — a document of an artist at his absolute creative peak, with Sheila E., Cat Glover, and a band operating at a level few performances have matched before or since.

Together, the two films tell the full story: the myth and the reality, the narrative and the pure music, the beginning and the height.

The night runs as follows: doors open at 7:30pm, Purple Rain screens at 8pm, followed by an interval, then Sign of the Times, with the dancefloor opening from 12:30am.

Double bill tickets are priced at €20 plus booking fee. Single screening tickets are €12.50. Table service is available throughout.
